Our community values will serve as the foundation to our Community vision. These are the “truths that we hold self evident” and will form the basis of all strategies that we develop in our vision plan. After we get your feedback we will make final modifications and put them to a vote from the Vision Steering Committee. The following are two versions of the draft Core Community Values. The first version was presented to the Vision Committee for their comment. The second version was developed after getting their feedback. Please look them through and give the Vision Steering Committee your feedback on them. Do you feel they are representative of our community? Do they reflect what you believe? What do you like about them? What suggestions do you have that would make them more representative of our city? First Draft version 1. Progressive The City of Daytona Beach recognizes the value of progressiveness as essential to developing a vibrant economy while retaining the unique attributes of the area. The community will be able to create a balance between open space and concrete, fun and family, and tourism and new business. 2. Safety and Security Daytona Beach must be safe and secure for our residents, for our guests, and for our children. Our citizens are dedicated to playing an active role in building a safer community. We value safe, well lit streets, a strong police presence with a police force that is in personal contact with the residents. We place importance on proactive planning to better deal with our homeless and transient population. We are supportive of efforts to minimizing and policing adult entertainment venues. We are dedicated to maximizing youth activities throughout our city. 3. Community Service We believe that the strength of a community is measured in large part by the willingness of citizens to get involved in the betterment of the community. We are a city with citizens who demonstrate a great degree of volunteerism...helping those in need…helping to make Daytona Beach a better place to live. Where needs arise, we are dedicated to providing help. 4. Aesthetics Daytona Beach is a beautiful city that must preserve and maintain its aesthetic value. We place emphasis on clean and well maintained buildings, streets and public space. We place value on attractive parks and ocean views. We are committed to seeing building criteria that include and enhance standards for construction and development that will ensure present and future generations are able to appreciate and access both the natural and man-made beauty in the area. 5. Nature Daytona Beach people share a commitment and love of the outdoors. Our sky scapes, sunsets and sunrises are a major asset. Our trees and green surroundings frame the beauty of our community. Our river, ocean, and outdoor recreational opportunities make us special. We want to protect it, use it and enjoy it. 6. Quality Lifelong Learning and Education We believe that learning is a lifelong process. As we all improve ourselves we improve our community. We believe that a strong education system not only provides quality learning experiences, but also serves to attract high quality industries which further strengthen our city. We are committed to providing a strong formal education for our youth, to better utilizing our college brain trust to the betterment of our city, to continuing education for our adult population, and to aligning education and training with career opportunities for all our citizens. 7. Economic Security The city of Daytona Beach values economic security and shall be a city that is committed to providing quality jobs by broadening the base of business and supporting entrepreneurship. We value our labor force and shall provide more access to training and job availability for local high school and college graduates alike. 8. The Arts Art, in all its forms, is an integral part of our community, plays a vital role in our quality of life, and helps to build our local economy. Arts should have a broad appeal in terms of ages, cultures, ethnicities and be accessible to all our citizens. 9. Entrepreneurship Starting and owning a business is a part of the American dream, and it is alive and well in Daytona Beach. Entrepreneurship, large or small in scope, is vital to a healthy local economy. We are committed to facilitating the creation of new high wage jobs by making it easier to start and run a business. We are dedicated to streamlining the processes of starting and running businesses, to working towards a well trained work-force, to turn-key facilities in which to operate, and to streamlining the permitting process. 10. Equality The citizens of Daytona Beach value equality because we believe it promotes fairness and trust. We believe that all races and cultures should be celebrated. We are dedicated to encouraging public participation from all our fellow citizens. We believe our diversity is a strength that will enable us to build a better community when we are all involved in making this city a better place to live. We are committed to insuring that equitable opportunities and quality of services are available to the entire community. 11. Honesty We value honesty and believe that it builds trust in relationships and breaks down barriers among our neighbors. We believe that honesty demonstrates our caring and valuing of people and their opinions. We are committed to the concept of open government which is built on a foundation of honesty. We are dedicated to the ideal that honesty in relationships is further demonstrated by our actions. We say what we mean and we mean what we say, knowing that our actions speak louder than our words. Realizing that we are no stronger than our weakest link, we believe that we should apply the most contemporary solutions to our city's issues with particular attention paid to stagnant and declining neighborhoods. 2. Safety and Security Daytona Beach must be safe and secure for our residents, for our guests, and for our children. Our citizens are dedicated to playing an active role in building a safer community. We value safe, well-lit streets, and a strong police presence with a police force that is in personal contact with the residents. But we realize safety and security is about more than greater police presence. A safe and secure community results from comprehensive and proactive planning. It results from bringing together different elements of our community in a way that is structured to promote people working together. It results from more engaged and involved citizens. 3. We wish to be respectful of everyone's tastes in the Arts. As a result, we believe that the Arts we promote should have a broad appeal in terms of ages, cultures, and ethnicities and be accessible to all our citizens. 9. Quality of Life Action Team

This team will provide input on quality of life issues for Daytona Beach. They will gather information to identify the types of strategies that can be undertaken to achieve an improved quality of life for Daytona Beach citizens. Quality of Work Life issues can include but not be limited to such things as Healthcare, neighborhood preservation, sense of community, Arts and culture, recreation, entertainment, historic preservation, special services, public safety, Family, youth and senior services, and Parks.
